About the ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer

The ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer programme gives you the practical skills to establish, run and continually improve an information security management system (ISMS). Delivered fully self-paced and online, it walks you through a complete implementation — from securing management buy-in and defining scope, to risk assessment, control selection and preparing for certification.

Where the Lead Auditor programme teaches you to assess an ISMS, this one teaches you to build one. You’ll apply a proven, best-practice implementation approach and learn to align people, process and technology so your organisation can achieve — and keep — ISO/IEC 27001 certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a PECB credential proving you can plan and implement an Information Security Management System (ISMS) that conforms to ISO/IEC 27001 — from gap analysis and risk treatment through to the Annex A controls and continual improvement.

Information security managers, consultants, IT professionals and project managers responsible for setting up or running an ISMS. A basic understanding of ISO 27001 is helpful but not required to start.

The exam is an essay-type, open-book paper of roughly 3 hours. You need the passing score set by PECB (generally around 70%). After passing you receive a 'Certificate of Exam Success', and the full certification is issued once you also meet PECB's professional-experience requirements.

The Lead Implementer learns to build, deploy and manage the information security management system (ISMS), while the Lead Auditor learns to independently audit one against ISO 27001. Implementers work on the 'build' side; auditors on the 'assess' side. Many professionals earn both over time.

PECB certifications are valid for three years. You keep yours active by earning Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits and paying the annual maintenance fee.
